The year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan. Back in history, the relationship between the two countries has been around for a long time, with the love story of Princess Yuhua and Japanese merchant Araki Sotaro more than 400 years ago.

Vietnam and Japan officially established diplomatic relations on September 21, 1973. After half a century, the relationship between the two countries has been continuously cultivated and developed in many fields, as well as entered a qualitatively new stage and go into depth. The framework has been continuously upgraded from “Reliable and Long-Term Stable Partner” (2002) to “Towards a Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia” (2006), “Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia” (2009) and “Deep Strategic Partnership for Asia’s Peace and Prosperity” (2014).

In particular, the political trust between the two countries has been increasingly strengthened through contacts and exchanges at all levels. Recently, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s visit to the G7 Summit from May 19 to 21, 2023 has opened a new development milestone in the Vietnam-Japan Strategic Partnership. The Japanese side also had official visits to Vietnam by Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide (October 2020) and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida (April 2022). The visits and regular meetings of leaders have contributed to strengthening the trusting relationship between the two countries, setting great directions for the effective development of bilateral relations in all fields.

Currently, Vietnam and Japan have developed many legal frameworks for bilateral relations. At the same time, the two countries are members of many major agreements such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
